How To Reduce The Effects Of Global Warming

Monday, June 21st, 2010

When news of our world warming up hit the media there was not even the slightest indication that the masses would respond swiftly. At first we all must have thought of global warming as a scam meant to grapple us in an unrelenting grip of fear. But the moment temperatures began to rise like never before we all woke up to the reality as if we had all been dreaming. Global warming needs to be stopped and it is everyone’s responsibility to contribute towards its demise.

A more rigorous approach must be taken towards the successful implementation of the Kyoto Protocol. The Kyoto Protocol is an agreement that stipulates that all signatories must make a visible commitment to reducing the emission of greenhouse gases. Generally most industrialized countries are signatories owing to the large amounts of industrial pollutants they release into our fragile atmosphere.

Unfortunately most of the countries with a strategic positioning on ending global warming have been obstinate to following the guidelines and obligations outlined in the agreement. It is for this reason that worldwide demonstrations are strongly recommended if we are going to end our current problem. This will not be as easy as the plug and play profit system, so be prepared.

The Warming of our globe can also be reduced by the use of fuel efficient cars that do not use crude oil. Eco-friendly motor vehicles using electricity or solar energy are our best chance at defeating the problem of our warming globe. Just think of how many motor vehicles are on our planet and how much gas they emit into the atmosphere? But this is never like trying to make money online, it is far more difficult.

Much of the blame for our present predicament is the uncontrolled cutting down of trees. Trees release the oxygen we need to breathe and they also absorb lethal carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. If we take care of our strategic tropical rainforests our world will become a more habitable place to live in than it is now.

If the entire world was dedicated to planting trees on given National Tree planting Day we would not be talking of the hole in the ozone Layer and rising global temperatures. If anything deforestation must be criminalized and the guilty culprits must be punished.

In the exact same way we would use a top forex indicator to safeguard our earnings we must also watch our rainforests. If anything is to go by rainforests are our only sources of hope. By sufficiently policing our rainforests we will be able to fight rising temperatures stemming from deforestation.

Earth Hour: Because change is hard

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

The second annual Earth Hour will be observed Saturday, March 27, 2010, at 8:30 p.m. local time. According to the official website for earth hour, as people all around the world turn off their lights during a scheduled hour, a blackout “will once again cascade around the globe, from New Zealand to Hawaii” The Los Angeles Times calls Earth Hour “the world’s largest global climate change initiative.” Earth Hour, says the Times, is a “global call to action . . . a call to stand up and take responsibility.”

Earth Hour is easy for all

In the most basic sense, Earth hour’s call to action is the least we can do. Being a part of Earth Hour doesn’t mean we need to change our lives by actually being responsible for the environment. All we need to do is turn off the lights for an hour.

Shop, donate, borrow money

It will not cost you anything to participate; however, Earth Hour sells gear on their official website to anyone who believes this might help stop climate change. Also, if you think it will help the environment, you may donate on their website money directly to Earth Hour. At the time of this writing, Earth Hour Gear was not yet available, but donations can be made now, so it’s not too early to fill out a personal loan application if you need a loan to do your part for Earth Hour.

Climate Change in a basic form

The Earth Hour website suggests that effects of climate change are shown in all of the US. Alaska has warmed two times as fast as the rest of the United States. Spring snowmelt is earlier, sea ice is reduced, glaciers are retreating and permafrost is thawing. In the Northwest, Water supplies are being strained while erosion is increasing because winters are wetter while summers are dryer. In the Southwest, droughts are becoming more of a concern because water supplies are more scarce.

In the Midwest, lake ice is reduced while downpours are twice as frequent as they were 100 years ago. In the Northeast there is less snow and more rain. In the Southeast there are more hurricanes, higher winds, more storm surges, increased air temperatures, and greater rainfall. On the islands and coastlines, where there are more sensitive impacts of climate change, wetlands are drowning, the man-made environment is threatened, shorelines are eroding, and sea levels are rising.

Taking a real stance doesn’t have to be hard

It makes sense to take a stance about global climate change, but taking responsibility for the problem requires more than an annual hour-long blackout ritual. It also doesn’t mean you have to live in a teepee without electricity of running water.

A person might ride a bike on occasion instead of driving a car, purchase fewer wasteful and unnecessary products, or choose foods that require less fossil fuel energy to produce. There’s nothing to stop people from switching off the lights for Earth Hour while making real changes, too; except, of course, that change is hard and flipping a switch is easy.

New Moore Island | one more island sinking into the sea

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

While it may be getting the media attention, New Moore Island is just one of dozens that are sinking into the sea. New Moore Island has long been the center of a land dispute between India and Bangladesh. Though residents have taken a short term loan of living space on other shores, the issue promises to only get worse. The dispute over New Moore Island is bringing media attention to the rising sea claiming more land then every before.

New Moore Island by any other name

New Moore Island is a relatively small piece of disputed land - less than 3 square miles. India claims that New Moore Island falls within their maritime borders, and therefore is Indian. The government of Bangledesh calls the island South Talpatti and also claims it. There have never been any permanent settlements on New Moore Island. The Bhola cyclone in 1970 actually revealed New Moore Island / South Talpatti, which is what started the conflict. India had at one point established a base on South Talpatti / New Moore Island, but international opinion was split on the question.

Rising sea levels engulf New Moore Island

The School of Oceanographic Studies in Calcutta reported to the BBC recently that New Moore Island had been entirely engulfed by rising sea waters. Confirmed by local fishermen and satellite pictures, New Moore Island is officially no more. Before the year 2000, sea levels in most of the world went up by approximately 3 millimeters a year, but between 2000 and 2010 sea level has risen at about 5 millimeters per year. Where New Moore Island sits, in the Sundarban Island Chain, sea levels have been rising at the rate of 3.14 centimeters a year. Four islands of the Sundarban chain sunk before New Moore Island.

More island nations might sink

New Moore Island and the Sundarban Island chains are not the only islands at risk of sinking into the ocean. The Maldives, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, has been losing land mass to the sea for years. Top elevation on the Maldives is only 8 feet above sea level, so even a high tide can wreak havoc. In response, the government of the Maldives has been building Hulhumale, a man-made island, for residents to emigrate to. In the Pacific Ocean between Hawaii and Australia, Tuvalu is also in danger of sinking. Experts estimate that Tuvalu’s 11,000 citizens will have no home in as little as 50 years. Each year, 75 Tuvalu residents can use military personal loans to move to New Zealand - but many more are left behind. Tonga, Kirbati, and the Marshall Islands are also at risk of disappearing just like New Moore Island did.

Can the islands be saved?

Most scientists agree that there is no definitive way to measure the cause of small islands sinking into the sea. Islands can rise and fall in addition to the fact sea levels regularly change. There are also arguments about if the increased water levels are due to global climate change or natural variations in the climate. There is no way to really stop an island from sinking into the ocean, though, so islands like New Moore Island are being forced to find solutions.

Global Warming - Is It Real?

Tuesday, February 16th, 2010

There appears to be quite a bit of debate about the phenomenon known as ‘global warming’. Does it exist or does it not exist?

As in many great debates there appears to be multiple opinions about the issue. A few years ago, Al Gore won a Nobel Peace Prize for his work (film) on global warming. Yet, many scientists have come out to say there is no evidence of global warming. In fact, the prestigious NASA, with its vast array of intellectual capital and high caliber scientists seems to be saying there is no evidence of it.

therabreath

Then the scandal broke. A flurry of emails were ’stolen’ and made public. The emails seemed to indicate that someone or some group of people is trying very hard to make a real scientific case for global warming. The emails seemed to show that they were overreaching the normal parameters of real science to come to their ‘conclusion’ and convince others too

Some people today are too young to remember, including myself, but it has been said that thirty years ago, we were being told that we were headed for an ice age. Now, suddenly we have been alerted that the polar caps are melting, that sea levels will rise and that there will be resultant disaster - unless we spend a lot of money to fix the problem now.

Oramd

Those watching the debate say that ‘fixing’ the problem means sending an awful lot of money to third world countries. Meanwhile, some of the bigger industrialized countries talk about curbing their emissions, but do not actually appear to be willing to do so. Seems that those countries are not fully convinced that global warming exists or is a problem. If they were convinced, would they not get busy solving the problem?

hydrofloss

There appears to be doubt. For the proponents of the global warming phenomenon, it does appear that providing some very definitive proof would benefit them in getting these ‘hold out’ nations to take action.

I am not taking sides within this article. However, I know that there are many people who are very passionate about their position on global warming. You tell me. Is global warming a real phenomenon or not? Why do you think that it is or is not?
