Clean Energy Created Using Fuel Cell From Bloom Box

Saturday, October 2nd, 2010

The Bloom Box is a fuel cell that generates electricity from oxygen and natural gas. You could have seen Bloom Energy’s Bloom Box on “60 Minutes” Sunday. September 1 is when it is really accessible. Bloom Energy claims that the Bloom Box is an “energy server” that creates clean, reliable and affordable power. The stand-alone unit has already been used by major corporations. It is used to help save energy. Bloom Box may just replace power plants and transmission lines of the energy grid, says Bloom Energy. There can be hardly any sales of Bloom Box unless it can get the price dropped quite a bit. 9 months of using Bloom Box saves eBay $ 100,000

The Bloom Box has been 10 years in the making. Company Founder, K.R. Stridhar raised $ 400 million for technology. This was shown in the “60 Minutes” feature on Bloom Energy on Sunday. The Bloom Box has ceramic discs in them. These discs have secret formulas on them. One side holds natural gas. The other side really has oxygen. The power comes when the two elements react and make an electro-chemical response. The taller the stack, the more power is generated. Starbucks can run on a Bloom Box. All it needs in it are 64 disks. It costs $ 800,000, although twenty companies in California have found a way to cut the price in half with the 30 percent federal tax break and 20 percent state subsidy. More than $ 100,000 was saved be eBay, reports eBay’s CEO, John Donahoe, who told CBS that the company installed five Bloom Boxes that run on carbon-neutral bio-gas from landfill waste.

Will the electrical grid go the way of the mainframe?

Bloom Box might replace power plants, Stridhar told Newsweek, just like personal computer exchanged mainframes. Google uses Bloom Energy and has servers ganged together to make huge data centers. Energy farms can do this too with Bloom Box. Stridhar said that Bloom Box may only be sold right now because of subsidies. A $ 3,000 investment for home installation could possibly be possible. This is, of course, if you consider economists of scale. He said every doubling in volume brings a 10-to-15 percent reduction in cost.

Market fuel cell

Soon, Bloom box may be demanded more. This is expected to go up. A report about the global fuel cell market by GBI Research published on altenergymag.com said that evolving technology and increasing demand will bring the cost of fuel cells down. 2013 may be when fuel cells could become commercialized. This would be as a result of price drops. $ 975 million can be where demand for fuel cells will go to by 2010, increasing sixfold. This was shown by a 2008 report done by Freedonia Group. In that time, a 41 percent growth rate in those using fuel cells for electricity is predicted.

Bloom Energy on 60 Minutes talks about Bloom Box

Wednesday, April 14th, 2010

Bloom Energy uses fuel-cell technology

“It is real. It works,” said K.R. Sridhar on “60 Minutes.”

He is talking about Bloom Energy’s invention, the Bloom Box, which creates power using fuel cells. Sridhar hopes that one day every home in the U.S. has a Bloom Box. Besides being better for the economy, the invention can provide low-cost electricity, much lower than traditional utility bills.

Bloom Energy - how does it work?

Sridhar is the scientist who developed the Bloom Box and is the co-founder of Bloom Energy who recently appeared on “60 Minutes” to speak about Bloom Energy. Fortunately, he did not have to rely on personal loans to start his company. He got several hundred million dollars in capital investments from capital firm Kleiner Perkins, which also helped fund Google, Amazon and Netscape.

The Boom Box, according to the New York Times, “generates its power wirelessly through a combination of oxygen and a fossil fuel - natural gas, bio-gas, etc.” On “60 Minutes”, Sridhar said that the fuel cells in the Bloom Box use sand baked into a ceramic and coated with proprietary inks. Bloom Energy’s Bloom Box will officially be unveiled Wednesday in San Jose.

Testing and commentary

Kleiner Perkins reports that if a home uses Bloom Energy instead of going through a utility company, its carbon emissions will be reduced by about half, and it costs less. Certainly, there are still those who won’t believe it until they actually see it, including editor-in-chief of GreenTech Media Michael Kanellos.

“I’m hopeful, but I’m skeptical,” Kanellos said. “People have tried fuel cells since the 1830s.”

However, Bloom Energy fuel cell technology is good enough for Google. The widely used search engine company has been using power from a Bloom Box at its California headquarters for the past 18 months. “We have a 400-kilowatt installation on Google’s main campus that delivers clean and affordable power,” said Google spokesman Jamie Yood. Big-time retailers like Wal-Mart, eBay and FedEx have also used the Bloom Box. Keep your eye on bloomenergy.com for the official public unveiling.

Bloom Energy Promises Reliable Energy Affordable for Everyone

Get energy for eight to nine cents per kilowatt hour

Bloom Energy has launched a new energy server with patented solid-oxide fuel-cell technology that can generate 100 kW, enough to power one small office building or 100 average U.S. homes. With the Bloom Energy Server, it will be possible to generate electricity locally, instead of purchasing it from a utility company.

Excluding fuel costs, the company says a server costs from $700,000 to $800,000, and will cost eight to nine cents per kilowatt hour to generate electricity. Proponents hope that the servers will someday provide clean, reliable, and affordable energy around the world. Places like FedEx, Cox Enterprises, eBay, Wal-Mart, Coca-Cola, and even Google are already using the new energy server.

It is not for everyone . . . yet

In a NewsFactor.com article, Bloom Energy CEO Dr KR Sridhar said the company is “dedicated to making clean, reliable energy affordable for everyone in the world.” At this time, however, it would take a lot more than a payday loan, even multiple numbers of payday loans, to get a Bloom Energy Server. The thrilling launch of the energy server probably was not attended by the everyday normal folks who need a cash advance from time to time, but high-profile types like venture capitalist John Doerr and California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger were present.

Cleaner than traditional methods by a hundred percent

According to the NewsFactor.com article, the Bloom Energy Server contains thousands of ceramic fuel cells that generate electricity using an electrochemical process rather than the traditional combustion method. When the Bloom Energy Server cells are powered by biogas or some other renewable fuel source, the electrical generation process is 100 percent cleaner than traditional coal-fired electrical generation. Compared with traditional methods, the Bloom Energy Server is about 67 percent cleaner when powered with fossil fuels.
