Snow causes travel chaos across parts of the UK

Recent winter weather and snowfall has thrown the United Kingdom into chaos.

In some of the worst hit parts of the country roads are littered with abandoned cars. Many people were attempting to retrieve their vehicles as temperatures began to rise slightly today. There have been reports that a high number of people have spent the night trapped in their cars in freezing temperatures.

Public transport systems have also been disrupted. Eurostar high speed trains to and from Europe have suffered break downs due to the ingress of snow into the trains power compartment. Around 2000 passengers were stranded for up to 16 hours in the tunnel beneath the English Channel. Some suffered panic attacks and many complained about the lack of information, food and water.

Eurostar have now begun to resume operation of their high speed trains after three days with no service. There are now enormous numbers of stranded passengers who all need to be transported from both France and the UK.

As the cold wintery weather persists the National Health Service have advised people to stay at home and only go outdoors if their journey is essential. This advice came after hospital accident and emergency departments reported record numbers of people requiring attention for injuries sustained as a result of falls on icy pavements.

With Christmas only days away many people need to visit their local towns in order to complete their pre-christmas shopping. This is forcing many to venture onto dangerous pavements that are treacherous.

People are already discussing how badly the UK has managed this latest period of wintery weather. Local councils have been quick to treat main road surfaces with grit and salt but many smaller side roads and pavements have remained untreated.

In February 2009 the UK was plunged into icy Arctic conditions when winter weather caused traffic chaos, school closures and disruption on a massive scale. This latest bad weather is prompting many to ask if the UK is capable of dealing with intense winter weather.
