Two of the most cited reasons for switching from the traditional light bulbs to fluorescent bulbs are mostly 1) saving the environment while 2) saving cash. The environmental bulbs are economical in several ways: they can be used up to ten times a longer time than the “normal” bulbs, and the amount of emanated heat is smaller, therefore there is less air conditioning necessary, which is significant mostly for large offices. Another fact is that the fluorescent bulbs use only one-third of the energy usage of the traditional bulbs, which is good both for the Earth and also your pocket.
Except for running a GTA MLS agency, I’m always looking for quick and easy tips to help my client’s lifestyle a bit more Earth-friendly. Most customers are not experts and may feel that the selection of fluorescent light bulbs is very wide, making it very difficult to choose the right one. In order to help you choose while shopping for light bulbs, we have summed up some easy tips for you.
The right bulb
These bulbs are produced in all shapes and sizes so the best idea is to bring the traditional bulb you want to change to the shop and match it with the available environmental bulbs. You will only need one-quarter of the original wattage (60 watt traditional bulb = 15 watt fluorescent bulb). It is important to read the label carefully, especially if you want to use your new bulb in a dimmer light - not all types of light bulbs are suitable for dimmers.
The right place
These environmental bulbs are not suitable for use in hot places with little air flow (recessed ceiling fixture). The bulb takes anything between one and three minutes to light up and doesn’t like to be switched on and off frequently. Therefore use in places where the bulb can stay on for at least 15 minutes at a time to prevent early damage.
How to dispose of environmental bulbs
After your light bulb has served you its time, you should always recycle it at your local recycling spot. Be very careful if you break a fluorescent bulb. There is some mercury in it, which is a poisonous heavy-metal. Do not try to clean it with a vacuum cleaner. It is also dangerous to touch the mercury with bare hands. It’s better to clean the larger bits with a piece of paper. Smaller pieces can be rid of with a scotch tape. Then mop the whole area with a wet cloth and open the window for at least 15 minutes to make sure the air circulates properly and you don’t breath in the mercury vapours.
